Taekwondo history |
Learned Tang Soo Do as a child (as Chinedum never lets me forget!), but fell in love with Taekwondo while attending Cornell University, where I learned from Master Han Cho and all of my teamates in the prolific Cornell Sport TKD program. Cornell's TKD program at that time averaged an annual enrollment of 200+ students and had a strong culture. While at Cornell, I
competed in the Ivy Northeast Collegiate TKD League, a collegiate TKD league founded by Masters Sung Chul and Jun Chul Whang of West Side Taekwondo, who have also been my competition coaches over the years since I graduated. The sense of comaraderie in the INCTL, both within teams and across different teams within the league, was really special, and inspired me to continue
to compete and teach after graduating. Since then, I have tried to stay involved with training and teaching Taekwondo, first at the University at Buffalo TKD Club, then helping to get C.W. Taekwondo at Boston off the ground with my friends and former Cornell teamates, and also founding and coaching the MIT Sport Taekwondo Club with the help of MIT student Christina Park. I
have remained active as a competitor at the regional, national and international level. I continue to balance my training for competition with my efforts as an instructor at CW, a coach at the MIT Sport TKD Club, and as a director of the INCTL.

life in the club is... |
Vibrant and fun, always meeting new people and working out alongside old friends.
|
life outside the club is... |
In those rare free moments that I have, I enjoy a good book, movies from all genres but especially Asian cinema, a game of tennis, or chilling with friends.
|
Taekwondo is... |
Taekwondo is about community - connecting with people who share your passion for the art and sport of TKD, and self discovery - forcing you to honestly assess yourself and change through hard work.
|
Taekwondo@CWB is... |
Competition workouts that leave me limp, crazy late-night sparring and training sessions, countless hours on email, getting a drink after practice (that's a "bear" or two to those in the know), promotion tests, parties chez Ben and Adrian, email blitzes from Chinedum, policy proposals by Chris, "Being Dan Chuang", Mel's funky ki-up and chocolate confections (not related), Kristian's bionic running men, Ji's "light" contact sparring, Chris T the "method" man with his tactical sparring, Mike's dizzying steps, Fabio's ridiculous narabang, Fredson's ups, Jayson getting about 150% stronger each year,
Imani rolling her eyes at Daddy G, Liza letting me know I've said something wrong, Kathy's machine gun sparring (can't .. keep ... up), Marc's suave style (not just in sparring) and killer right leg, Christina's BK (that's back kick, yup), Caroline's deadly push kick, Hamilton the motor-mouth (kidding ...), Kyria's trademark hook kick, Pano "can you pleeeze wear a helmet", and our very own cardio kick boxing Olympian webmaster instructor club president "jedi mind trick" master and workout machine Chinedum, who has been there night in and night out pushing and making everyone better.
|
Significant moments |
Testing for my black belt at Cornell; unreal summers spent in Ithaca with friends training at the Lansing dojang; that crazy summer of 2001 training in ~100 degree heat night after night at "the church" with Kathy; Chinedum and Marc; qualifying for my first US National Team Trials by beating the previous year's national champion; winning the first INCTL cup as coach of the MIT Sport TKD team; opening our dojang's doors in Cambridge, MA; traveling to Athens to watch Chinedum compete in the
Olympics.
